While DePINs span a broad range of applications, from energy to logistics, Silencio is focused on a unique niche: Fighting noise pollution!

In this article, we’re going to take a look at how DePINs work and how we at Silencio are putting the blockchain to use to fight against noise. From the basic concept and idea of DePIN, to the blockchain as the foundation for this via community empowerment to the real-life use-case of Silencio!

Understanding DePINs

So, what’s the deal with these DePINs we’re talking about?

Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks, or DePINs, are a transformative application of blockchain technology, enabling the decentralized deployment and operation of physical infrastructure.

DePINs use blockchain tokens to boost the deployment & operation of physical infrastructure for real-world services. The devices have a broad range from private weather stations to AI-powered cameras, smartphone sensors, and more! Contributors are incentivized by token-rewards.

Or, to boil it down to a level even your grandma would understand: It’s like when you share gardening tools and lawnmowers with your neighbor. But instead of borrowing tools, you’re sharing WiFi, solar power, geo-data, etc. Tracking & payment is done via that Bitcoin thing!

The cornerstones of DePINs are decentralization, security, and transparency. Decentralization ensures that power and control are spread out, enhancing security and making unauthorized changes difficult due to the blockchain’s distributed nature. Transparency is achieved as every transaction and decision is recorded on the blockchain, available for anyone to verify and trust.

Theoretically, the concept of DePINs has been around for many years but up until the beginning of 2023, there wasn’t really a consensus on the naming conventions and only over time, the name DePIN has been established and generally accepted.

As of the beginning of 2024, many have pointed out that DePIN will become one of the major sectors of the blockchain-industry due to its real-life applicability and superior approach to building globally distributed physical infrastructure. There are different types of DePINs, ranging from storage networks, to VPNs, to computational networks, sensor networks, and many others.

Recognizing the relevance of the problem, with noise pollution costing the global economy over $5 trillion annually and being identified by the World Health Organization as a major environmental threat to public health, Silencio set out on a mission. Our goal? To harness the collective power of our community to build the world’s most comprehensive noise data repository. And since our inception in February 2023 we have managed to grow to more than 140.000 contributors!

Our approach is simple yet innovative: Silencio App users utilize our app to measure and contribute noise-level data. This data doesn’t just sit in a database; it’s actively used to inform decisions about real estate, choose quieter venues, and drive community improvements worldwide. The magic happens when this data is sold — profits are shared across the Silencio network, ensuring that those who contribute benefit directly from their contributions.

And the best thing about this:
It’s not just about building this database but about raising awareness and enabling government and municipalities to take action against Noise Pollution!

Noise Pollution leads to the loss of approximately 1 million healthy years of life each year due to a variety of health conditions, including annoyance, sleep disturbance, and ischemic heart disease.
